Rod Ansell


Since returning from training & working in Sydney in 1987 director, actor, musician and singer Rod Ansell has become a familiar face on the stages and screens of Newcastle and the Hunter with major roles in many professional productions including Robin Hood,Hounds On Ice, Summer of the 17th Doll, These Foolish Things, Oliver!, Essington Lewis, The Venetian Twins, A midsummer Night's Dream, Brilliant Lies, Macbeth, Money and Friends, Absurd Person Singular, Arms and the Man, Twelfth Night, Kid Stakes, Other Times, Debts, Newcastle Shorts, Abelard & Heloise, Guillotin!, Dick Whittington, SAO, Confusion of Tongues and many more. In the 1970s, Rod was training as an English teacher in Newcastle and was active in campus theatre & revue when he discovered the renaissance of Australian theatre at Sydney's Nimrod & other theatres. On graduation, he trained in Sydney with Hayes Gordon's Ensemble Studios & Ent'racte Mime Theatre plus lots of classes in voice, acting, singing & movement & many performances in fringe theatre & cabaret. He turned professional in 1981 and ran his own touring company, Labyrinth Theatre for most of the 1980s. For relief, he's also sung and played harmonica, sax and ukelele in bands Los Diablos, Pablo Diablo. Izakite, Hot Rod and the Skidmarx, Sea of Heartbreak, Juke Joint Jumpers, The Polecats Cabaret D'Amour and Fat Elvis and the Lovetones recording 2 CDs of original songs, Back To Maitland and Great Big Bum with the Tighes Hillbillies. Country music legend, Slim Newton, (of Redback on the Toilet Seat fame) has recorded Rod's song Turn Me Into Petfood When I Die. Rod is currently teaching voice & acting, voicing TV & radio commercials, running AAAA casting service for local & national film & TV. He is currently teaching acting for Uni of Newcastle's Drama Dept.
